Help me interpret this

So my friend and I were discussing suicide and I said that another friend of mine once said that it seems like history has to repreat itself in order for people to learn from their mistakes (meaning that people have to commit suicide, survive it, and learn that it's not a good idea). Here's the conversation:

Her: uh no
Her: history doesnt have to, not if ur in control of it
Her: its ur choice, not history
Me: Depends, sometimes it's easier to learn only after making a mistake.
Her: um no, if ur dead u can't
Me: I'm not saying if one is dead.
Her: its better to learn by not killing urself and eventually leading a happy life
Me: I mean in general now.
Me: Not only suicide.
Her: well in general too, u dont have to make stupid mistakes on purpose
Me: Sometimes it easier to "get" something after making a mistake. It depends.
Her: that doesn't mean u should do it simply so u can "get" it the easier way
Her: if u can "get it" another way, u gotta do it the smart way

I asked if her statement "well in general too, u dont have to make stupid mistakes on purpose" meant that people do not have to make mistakes on purpose (intentionally) in order to learn from their mistakes and she said no.

I asked if her statement "that doesn't mean u should do it simply so u can "get" it the easier way" meant that people she learn from the hard way and she said that her statement did not mean that, although she believes that people should learn from the hard (smarter) way.

She's refusing to clarify what her statements meant. Do you have any idea what else she could've meant since she eliminated those possibilities? Thanks! (I have OCD so I have to understand everything otherwise the thought lingers in my mind for days, please please help me, thank you!)
