China's economic growth rate has fallen for the third quarter in succession, amid fears that the economy could be heading for a severe downturn. (From BBC News)
My question is can we also say "heading towards" in stead of "heading for"? Thanks

Hi Abli Cambridge learner's dictionary has this to say about 'heading for' head for sth to be likely to experience a bad situation soon, because of your own actions or behaviour They're heading for disaster if they're not careful. The country is heading for recession. So I guess 'heading towards' would not give the sense of unpleasantness as 'heading for' does.
