"having just lost the war" - Can this modify a verb?
Hello,
"Colonists were eager to venture into lands that the French vacated having just lost the war."
Is this a correct sentence? Does "having just lost the war" modify vacated? I think it acts like an adverb telling why they vacated the land, but isn't this a participle phrase, which as I understand can only modify nouns or pronouns?
