Why do I find Harry Potter films glum, soulless, and without dramatic tension?
Harry Potter films don't have a vision of reality. There are no laws; "anything goes". So there are no real, true-grit plots, no solid archetypal themes, no death, no life... all is ham performance where consequences are like vapours.
The Harry Potter Universe is a montage patched from a limited number of bad-taste sources.
These sources include glum Christian Halloween horror kitsch with its pagan mockery; and an ageing, yet still tiresome, western stage magic, complete with rabbits and hats. A strong influence is the old American TV series "Bewitched", where things and people vanish and appear, and vanish again, with a twinkle of the eye, a wriggle of the nose, or a waving of some bloody silly stick.
