hardly when or than
In a respected grammer book, I happened to see that two sentences as follows are right. What do you think?
No sooner had I gone out than the baby started crying
No sooner had I gone out when the baby started crying
I knew the only possiple option was the one with no "sooner ........than" or "hardly ......................when"
Is the sentence ok with no "sooner .....when"

I find both "no sooner had ... " and "no sooner had ... " acceptable.

I find both "no sooner had ... than ..." and "no sooner had ... when ..." acceptable.
"than" is probably 'more correct' but "when" does not stand out as very different.
