Hi,Can had to and needed to be used interchangeably? If not, how are they different?He had to do it.He needed to do it.They sound similar.

They are nearly interchangeable, but in cases where there is a difference, it's that while 'need' expresses a state which may or may not be satisfied, 'had to' implies more strongly that the associated action has actually occurred.

One tiger needed to be shot. (At this point the tiger is still alive.)
When they reached their destination, they needed to pay the driver. (At this point, they might not have paid the driver yet.)
Scores of foreign tourists were caught up in the unrest and needed to be evacuated. (At this point they have not necessarily already been evacuated. The problem of evacuating them has not yet been solved.)

One tiger had to be shot. (And it was shot and was dead.)
When they reached their destination, they had to pay the driver. (And they did pay the driver.)
Scores of foreign tourists were caught up in the unrest and had to be evacuated. (And they were evacuated and were no longer in danger.)
