The time really, however we use them differently. Good evening is a welcome. Good night is a farewell at night.

The time really, however we use them differently. Good evening is a welcome. Good night is a farewell at night. Evening is really between afternoon and nighttime. However you would never say goodnight to somebody as a greeting.
