The story "The Letter" tells the reader the intrinsic worth of a letter. Coachman Ali waits for a letter from his daughter for five years. This is because he has boundless love and affection towards her. As for Ali, this letter symbolises happiness and hope that will rejuvenate an otherwise cheerless existence.
The writer Dhumaketu emphasizes the fact that a letter is not some words on a tiny piece of paper, but love and hope of one's relations, friends, lover and so on. When the physical presence of our dear ones is not possible, the words they send us in the form of a letter, enables us sense their love and concern. The touching words of consolance and valubale pieces of advice we recieve while we face severe hardships, animate our lives with newfound hope.
Hence it can be said that letter is essentially a symbol of human emotions, aspirations, love, and hope all rolled into one.
