Got in/into the passenger seat

A car pulled up to the curb and Jenny got in/into the passenger seat.

Johnny pulled up to the curb and Jenny got in/into the passenger seat.

Can I use both interchangeably in both sentences? Is one of them more correct than the other?

into is more common in my experience, but in is also not unusual.
