I was a young girl when my family moved from Rajasthan to Kerala. In this new state, I was enrolled in an English middle school. The language and culture was very new to me. Making friends was challenging for me because I couldn’t communicate with them in their local language or comprehend their culture. I was considered an outsider and became a loner. But I soon realized that I had to change my ways. I came to understand that, while being different from them, I shouldn’t be ashamed of my culture or language, and should respect their culture also. I first worked on my studies and worked extremely hard to achieve good grades in all subjects. Since everything was taught in English, I focused on improving my English and then learned the local language, Malayalam. And in order to expand my social network, I got involved in extracurricular activities and joined clubs for science, math, and IT. I was able to make many friends because of those clubs. I also participated in the computer talent tests and took part in group song competitions, which helped me gain stage presence and confidence. I also took part in a story-writing contest that was organized during our youth festival.

I took a class called Resonance to present news reports and speeches in the auditorium. That helped me learn to speak in front of a large group of people and my English significantly improved. My school life got really better but in 10^th grade, I slipped on the stairs that fractured my leg. I needed three months of bed rest for complete recovery. I was unable to attend school and wasn’t even able to study at home. But after a month, I got a little better and went back to school to complete all of my assignments, lectures, and prepare for model examinations. I completed all of my assignments first, and began to cover all the missed lessons on my own. I worked really hard preparing for the model exam but failed most subjects. Many people believed that I would have to retake my 10^th grade. However, I didn’t wanted to give up so easily since I had important goals and didn’t want all those years of effort to be in vain. I worked hard and took the final examination, and I achieved 97% and received award for being in the top five.

Ever since 8^th grade, I have been curious about the business world and wanted to learn more about it. My father taught me the basics about business and how no one can run a business without taking risks since there is no reward without risk. So decided to major in it, although many advised me to rethink my decision and pursue science instead of business as I had an excellent GPA, but I refused to listen to them as I decided to follow my passion. I was confident that I would not have any regrets.

My aim is to pursue my bachelor’s degree outside of India because the majority of our universities lack a global perspective and the education system places a great emphasis on memorizing. I also want to study in Korea because of the rich culture and high standard of education there, and I believe working in any of the top companies in Korea will teach me valuable skills and give me great practical experience.

In my 11^th grade, I took commerce and learned the basics of business over the past two years. I gained knowledge about company accounting procedures, managing partnership accounts, understanding consumer behavior, statistics, marketing and so on.

By the time I had my 11^th grade exams, COVID had already started and we had to do our exams online. I received 86% in 11^th grade, and I received a score of 99% the following year in 12^th grade. My excellence in the class earned me an award, and I started to prepare for studying in South Korea, but unfortunately I had to took a gap year because my father was having severe financial difficulties due to COVID issues, and he had no staff other than my brother to support him at his shop, so I made the decision to assist him there. I helped with cleaning the store and assisting customers as needed. I also did accounting work, such as creating sales and purchase accounts, and managing bank accounts.

I have started learning Korean on my own, and I use an app called hilokal to meet some excellent international friends from South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan. I also took a free online course on YouTube in digital marketing.

The GKS program would help me achieve my future goal, which is to enable people in my country to realize their full and true potential. I am, thus, truly grateful that I have this opportunity for this unique program. I hope to utilize my career as a link between South Korea and India. I will work hard, offer my support to my peers and share valuable information for the benefit of all.
