I think you meant to include "to remember" in 2).

I find that both analyses are plausible, though when I read the sentence, I find myself gravitating toward analysis 1). The sentence is just inherently ambiguous in its fine details. The ambiguity is not significant enough, however, to cause any native speaker to be bothered by it, or indeed, for some speakers, even to notice it.
