Election Candidates should possess basic education qualification

Election candidates refer to those who are aspiring to become ministers in the government. When an individual has basic education we mean she or he possesses elementary knowledge of language that is commonly spoken in the region, arthematic operations, science and social sciences. Here, qualification implies that the individual should have acquired this knowledge in a formal setting and passed the qualifying examination. In addition, basic education inculcates a variety of life skills in learner. One of them is leadership. In the past not all the people who occupied leadership roles had had basic education. However, they rose to leadership by the dint of their hard work and highly valued traits. Elections for occupying the ministerial positions in the government play a very important role in determining the growth and development of a country.
The country is ruled efficiently if the people who rule are capable enough to do so. In the recent years there have been debates all over the country whether those who contest for elections for being a member of the state legislature or parliament should possess basic education qualification or not.

Those who argue that basic education should be compulsory for election candidates say that unless the candidates have basic knowledge of English, math and science, how will they able to work for the people’s welfare. Being a member of parliament or even the state legislature, the person needs to work with a lot of documents related to the work undertaken by the officials who in most of the cases are highly educated. The elected representative must be able scrutinize these documents so well that the officials under him do not abuse their office for personal benefits.

We live in a world where science and technology has made tremendous progress. The rate of mechanization is so astonishing that there is hardly any field which is free from the influence of machines. Communication technology is making giant strides with an invention happening almost every hour. In this light of this situation, the people who occupy leadership positions must be suitably educated in order to understand the problems facing the people reach out to them as quickly as possible with effective solutions.

On the other hand some strongly believe that basic education must not be made compulsory for those contesting elections. They say that education is highly helpful for a person who is to contest elections, but it does not guarantee an efficient and corruption free rule. They argue that educated minds have the propensity to twist the facts and hoodwink the common masses. According to them the most essential qualification for one to be a leader is the will to serve the people in an honest way.

Some hold the opinion that most of those who sincere about working for the people have gone through untold struggle discrimination and most of all have hailed from poor families. They are determined to come to power and eradicate the inhuman practices to which they were victims once. Such people must be encouraged to contest elections irrespective of their education qualification. A

Every country needs able leaders. Basic education certainly ensures that the individual is equipped with elementary knowledge of the subjects which they directly or indirectly deal with when they become leaders. However mere knowledge of books is not enough to rule the country; a person who aspires to be a leader must inculcate leadership skills besides values such as honesty tolerance, patience perseverance and humility.
