You asked the right question -- you do need a structure and that is very important.

There are many ways to write an essay, which means there are many structures that you could use. The structure of your essay should be chosen to fit what you want to say about the subject. For instance, an essay about television could tell the history of television, it could tell the imact of television on society, it could tell how television in one part of the world compares to television in another part of the world, it could tell how television will lead to the end of civilization...

For history, you should have a body section for each major time period in the history; for the impact on society, you could do a body section on each kind of impact, describing who is impacted, how the impact happens, and what is the actual damage or benefit of each impact; for a parts of the world comparison, you could have a section describing the content types, or the credibility, or the audience, or other things in each important part of the world...

So that's a way to know what to put into the main body of the essay. Each section could be one paragraph or many, depending on how much information is wanted. The overall structure should always be an introduction section (which tells what the essay is about and VERY a short reference to each major section... followed by the major sections (with transitions between each to lead the reader through), followed by a summary or conclusion section where you emphasize teh message and/or the structure of the essay.

So that's it -- use it for any subject. Each piece is easy when you're used to it -- the trick is just to do it.
