"on even terms" - to have equal standing in regard to each other. So, the definition woul mean to contend or strive against someone having equal standing. I don't understand that "with success" part. Please help me with it.

I start using my bucket to bail out the boat (ie throw water out).
If I throw out the water at the same rate it is coming in, I am coping. (Think of it as 'I am on even terms with the ocean'.)
