I don't get that meaning at all.
Circling the drain means you're in waiting pattern to go "down the drain" and fail - you're stuck and unable to prevent what will happen.
But it's not sewage.
Here the "obscurity" just means what he was doing was utterly meaningless and unimportant in the universe.
