Double place clause
Which are correct:
1-In front of me, it was all dark. I knew where John was standing. I gazed at the place where John was standing in the darkness.
2-In front of me, it was all dark. I knew where John was standing. I gazed into the darkness, at the place where John was standing.
3-In front of me, it was all dark. I knew where John was standing. I gazed into the darkness and at the place where John was standing.
I am not gazing at the totality of darkness. I am gazing at one part of it; the part where John is standing.
