Where does the expression "Don't mention the war " comes from? thanks

I think it's from an episode of "Fawlty Towers" where Basil is entertaining some German guests at the hotel. He tells his staff: "Don't mention the War", then, after a bang on the head can't stop mentioning it himself. The episode is called "The Germans" and I guess came out in around 1975.
