Be sure to remember the underlined part of the question. It is used a lot. It will be useful to you on this forum.

"He was gone before" makes no sense in isolation. It must be followed by the words that explain "before what?" as in I tried to say something, but he was gone before I opened my mouth.

"He had gone before" says that he left before some other event (not given in the context) happened. "before" is like "earlier" in this example.

to be gone is commonly used as to have gone. The meanings are very similar.

She is gone. ~ She has gone. / She was gone. ~ She had gone.
