Difference between lost and have lost

What is the right choice here?

I can't do my homework because I ( have lost - lost - had lost) my notebook.

I reckon 'lost' is possible, but 'have lost' seems to be the most appropriate option here. Losing your notebook did happen in the past, but its effect is still present.
