1) "Based on " is a better choice, but I still don't like the sentence very much. I would say something like one of the sentences below.
(If)(When) you know their position, you know how tall players are.
By knowing their posiition, you (can) know how tall players are.
You (can) know how tall players are by their position.

2) "Depending on is interchangeable with based on?" is not a correct English question. You've been here a long time and have thousands of posts. It seems strange that you would try to make good sentences but don't seem to care about writing correct questions.
Is 'Depending on' interchangeable with 'Based on'?

You should highlight words you are talking or asking about, by quotation marks or italics or some other way.
