Deep-fry model

Question

That night I was more worried than ever. I'd read the chapter on incubation at least four times and was still confused about where to start. I didn't happen to have an old aquarium lying around! We didn't happen to have an incubation thermometer! Would a deep-fry model work?

An incubation thermometer would be used to measure temperature when raising chicks from eggs. It would have temperature readings below the boiling point of water. (Near 40c would probably be the highest it would go; I don't know, but I'm guessing that chicks wouldn't survive very long in extremely hot conditions.)

a deep-fry model means a thermometer that would be used to measure the temperature of a deep-fat fryer. The hot oil used to cook food is much hotter than the boiling point of water, near 175 c I'd guess. And the lower range would probably not even approach the higher point of the incubation thermometer.

So I'd guess the writer is saying "this person is really ignorant about the usefulness of a deep-fat thermometer to measure and control the temperature of an incubation area - it wouldn't go low enough to be useful."
