Could anyone please explain why 'being' is used here? Would it be grammatically correct if I omitted it?
.? Crocodiles kill an estimated 1000 people every year, and Australian Craig Duckmann was very close to being one of them.

I think you're misinterpreting "close". He was nearly one of them. He was almost one of them.
