Are these all okay:
I decided to give the movie industry another shot because in my mind I thought this time may/might/could/would be different!

Only 'may' sounds off to my ear. It's 'thought ... might'.

Only 'may' sounds off to my ear.
It's 'thought ... might'. The two go together so often that 'thought ... may' sounds wrong.
