Correct and meaningful?

1. The moon's own light cannot make itself shine.
2. The moon doesn't shine with its own light.
Are they correct and meaningful? I doubt the first sentence is correct.

I might have put it thus:
The moon doesn't create light; it reflects the light of the sun.
