1. Contention: claim; thesis. demand for something due or believed to be due. Does this word have two definitions? One is claim, the other one is demand for something that is deserved? I don't really get the meaning.
2. "They spurned democracy and would have been shocked to see themselves held up as its defenders." The phrase “help up” means a) delayed b) cited c)accommodated d) carried e) waylaid I chose c), but the answer was b). WHY? Help up means like they supported democracy, as if its defenders.
