1. No. They ended up ...means at the end of everything....it means that 'they' eventually were the ones left to take care of the children. Very good question. "they" are the ones that are now caring for the children. Someone else stopped caring for the children.

2. Often is not necessary. "Every day" is enough to express the concept. delete the word' often'. Yes...to get the children up means to wake the children up.

3. Yes...in general that is what it means. A better sentence might read "Discussing it wil help you 'arrive at' a solution".

4. Takes in this sense means 'requires'.

5. The rest of my family 'is' mexican.

Steven, thanks for your posts. You make native speakers think and analyze their own language. I'm now calling friends on the phone to determine which sounds better in everyday speech :.....the rest are or the rest is....I really think either one is acceptable..depends on the idea the speaker is trying to convey

...the rest of my family being mexican......the subordinate clause requires that something else follow.

For example "I am a native-born Canadian; the rest of my family being Mexican, it can make for a confusing Cinco de Mayo!

Although I agree with your analysis and explanation, I just want to point out that the original poster should have used 'come up with' instead of 'come out with'.
