can you please help me? we had an argument with my teacher about the difference between the expression "civilization's direction" and "civilization's orientation". Is there any? if yes, what's the difference?

Tricky one, but I perceive a difference. I think that a civilization's direction is the course of development it is following. For example, a civilization could be heading for democracy, or towards anarchy, or towards recognition of female bishops, or any other 'result'.
