The reporting verb is say

if you have it in any present or future tense , the second verb keeps its tense.

He says I am pretty.

if you have it in any past tense, the second verb undertakes the next "more past" tense

slapdash representation :

simple present -> past present
"I know the answer" -> He said he knew the answer.

simple past -> past perfect
"I knew the answer" -> He said he had known the answer.

present perfect -> past perfect
"I have done your homework" -> She said she had done your homework.

present progressive -> past progressive
"I am expecting thanks for this." -> She said she was expecting thanks for that.

past progressive -> perfect progressive
"I was planning to thank you for this." -> He said he had been planning to thank her for that.

future (will) -> would (= past for "will" ) + verb
"I will post this. " -> She said she would post that.

future (going to) -> present/past progressive
"I am going to wait. " -> She said she is/was going to wait.

Don`t forget about the other alterations that need be done when passing to indirect speech, such as changing pronouns

ps: you actually have some examples of changing pronouns ( the demonstrative "this" into "that" ) in the sentences I wrote above, and temporal indicators must be changed too, for example if in direct speech you have "tomorrow" , in indirect speech you must change it into "the following day / the next day" and so on and so forth.
