Capitalize the word state
I've battled with this for some time; and even with exhaustive research, I remain confused.
I'm wondering about the capitalization of the word state in the following examples:
You need to be licensed through the state.
The licensing requirements are a state policy.
While I'm at it, how about government?
He works for the government.
and:
He works for the state.

Hi, These words are common nouns, and do not have to be capitalized every time you use them. When they appear in phrases like 'The State of Ohio' or 'The Government of Canada', the whole phrase is considered a proper noun, and thus capitalized. Sometimes the article 'the' is not capitalized.
