It's not

You can say:

1. Extra lives become fewer and farther between as you progress through the game.

2. Extra lives become harder and harder to find as you progress through the game.

3. Extra lives become rarer as you progress through the game.

[1] and [3] both carry the idea that there are a fewer total amount of lives to find as you progress.

[2] carries the meaning that although the total amount stays basically the same, they are harder to get to.
