By the day
Can this phrase be used when talking about a drastic change as in " The Economy is slumping by the day" ( As if it was a visble everyday trend). Can it be swapped for "day by day" or "from one day to the next", an d what is the difference in meaning if any?

They're all correct and common and have the same meaning. To my ear, "by the day" is the most dramatic. It seems to suggest that tomorrow may be too late.
