I am just out of school and am looking for funding to study electrical engineering next year.I found many companies that offer bursaries in my field and most of them say "Apply in writing".
I have pasted my draft letter below.Im going to send it to a quite a few places, it's just a general a bursary application letter.
I had been browsing through this site for a few days to try and get an idea of how to approach the letter, but I have not seen any letters that cover my specific situation. In short i need some help with the final polishing and also some information on applying for bursaries
Thanks. 123 random Street xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx 5 March 2012
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Dear Sir or Madam
I am writing to apply for the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx bursary program to secure funding for my studies in 2012.
Ever since my early school days I have always been a hardworking individual who remained focused on my ultimate goal of passing my matric with excellent marks. I believe that it was this focus that separated my from many of my peers, I was often chosen (either by teachers or fellow group members) to be the group leader when my classmate and I were assigned group tasks. It is these factors that eventually led to me placing among the top three matriculants in my school.
Now that previous goal has been accomplished I have set my sight on a new goal; to get a degree in electrical engineering, this subject as a whole especially the study of electronics. Technology is constantly evolving, adapting to the needs of the people. Once someone makes a discovery the technological knowledge gained is eventually used to develop even greater technologies. I would be honored to contribute to this cycle in any way I can.
If I were to be the recipient of this bursary I would use the skills I acquire to help move South Africa forward in terms of new technological developments. I believe that it is an exciting time to be living here as we are an up and coming nation. As we grow so will our need for new technologies. One of the reasons that fuel my desire to become an electrical engineer is the Square Kilometer Array Radio telescope. It is to be the largest telescope of its kind ever built, and will be constructed either in the Karoo or in Australia. This project will require fresh, talented individuals to build and run this technological marvel and my dream is to one of them.
Thank you for taking the time to read my application. I hope that it has helped sway your decision in my favour. I am eagerly anticipating your positive response. Yours sincerely Theo McPherson

I am also applying for a bursary and would appreciate some constructive crisicism on my letter. I am a potential student pursuing my bachelor in child and youth care. While I am looking into pursing my career I am struggling with severe financial challenges which I will disclose during the course of this letter.
