auxiliary verb forms
Hi all !
I have been studing English for small time, so sorry for my errors.
I have problem with auxiliary verbs form understanding.
The example from textbook:
<“I asked them if they had been playing with food in the living room, and they said that they had not been playing with food. I asked them if they had been takingshowers in the bathroom and they said no. I asked them if they had been torturing the cat. >
In the example "Past Perect Progressive" had used. Why had not used "Past Progressive" ?
One more example.
I am imagine a next situation:
I borrowed tool to a my friend.
The friend has come to my house for return my tool.
He is standing opposite me and tell me (next versions):
"I have brought your tool", - Present Perect, (i believe this is correct variant) or
"I am bringing your tool" - Present Progressive, (One person explained me: if you are in front of each other - use Present Progressive) or may be else ?
Which case is correct in this situacion ?
I would really appreciate a detailed explanation in simple language. And as for the correction of my topic.

“I asked them if they had been playing with food in the living room" -- the actual question asked was "Have you been playing with food in the living room?"
