I read this article in a newspaper and i am unsure about use of "been " here. Is it correct to use "been" here without "has/have"?
It was a competitive business, hunting-gathering, and any hunter-gatherer dumb enough to ask a passing stranger which was the best way to get a nice, juicy woolly-haired mammoth steak for the family dinner would as likely as not BEEN given directions designed to lead him to the lair of the local sabre-toothed tiger which would convert him into dinner. Nope. Never ask for directions. Better lost than in a tiger's tum.

You've found yourself a poorly written sentence. For me , this sentence makes sense only if you replace "as likely as not been given" with " likely be given".
