Hello,

I was given a worksheet in which there was a picture. In the picture there is a cat on a hut and a girl under a treee.

I have to write a few sentences about the picture e.g

1. A (The) cat is on a (the)hut.

2. A(The) tree is near the hut.

3. A(The) girl is under a(the) tree.

My doubt is , Should I use 'a' or 'the' before hut, tree, girl, cat. In my opinion, the examiner is very clear about the cat, hut, girl, tree , because there is a picture and I am talking about the girl , hut, tree, cat of that picture only. So, If I use "the" before these nouns, there should be no confusion at all.

What is your thougt?

Hi, It's a little hard to decide. However, I'd say 'a'. I don't see how anyone could say that's wrong, but I can see where the examiner might feel that 'the' is wrong.

It's a little hard to decide. However, I'd say 'a'. I don't see how anyone could say that's wrong, but I can see where the examiner might feel that 'the' is wrong.

If your sentences are all separate, not connected as in a paragraph, I'd say 'a' in every case. Otherwise, I'd say 'a' at the first mention, and 'the' thereafter.

0I just have this to add: I think if you are showing the picture and physically together with the examiner, explaining to him about the things in the picture, 01u00you certainly are welcome (welcomed?)02u00 to use "THEs" before the nouns, but if you are jotting down on a paper about the things on the paper given, then I would welcome you using "a" or "an" in front of noun
