"Are u on?" ??

My friend (non-english speaker) uses to ask me if I am online on msn by a single sentence: "Are u on? "which make me feel funny and I think it is inappropriate. May I know is this term proper english? and how can we use "are u on?" in different circumstances?

This kind of abbreviation (u instead of you) is extremely common in texting, twitter, msn, etc., but is not really proper English.

Are you on is OK as long as the reader knows what is being referred to.

eg Are you online?

eg Are you on the bus? (you might ask this if you were talking to someone on the phone)
