I'm looking for an idiom or a phrase to begin a sentence with. The idiom has to connote happening from a long time. I'm unable to explain my requirement.
I'll give the sentence itself, and hope somebody will be able to pitch int the proper idiom/phrase to complete it.
______________________, he earned the title of "Gator" as he was known for wrestling alligators.
One phrase that comes to my mind is over time. However, that just doesn't sound proper. Then, the sentence becomes:
Over time, he earned the title of "Gator" as he was known for wrestling alligators.
I'll be grateful for all the suggestions.

"Happening from a long time" is not understandable English. Sorry. There are many possibilities.
