Although vs. despite
Hi!
I read the following in a TOEIC exam:
"140. ___ saving money for a long time, Mr. Cho said he could not afford to purchase a new house ....
(A) Since
(B) Because
(C) Although
(D) Despite
Answer: D" ((May, 2010))
Do you agree with the above that D is ONLY correct? What about C?
I referred to the following example sentence:
"ALTHOUGH EXPECTING the news, I was greatly shocked by it." ((Oxford Guide to English Grammar, 139 Participle clauses of time, reason etc, 3 Conjuction + participle))
Would you please let me know why C (Although) is NOT correct?

Whether (C) is right or wrong is a matter of opinion. I am not saying it's wrong but I would prefer: Although having saved money for a long time, Mr. Cho said he could not afford to purchase a new house.

I would use the perfect participle because Mr. Cho had saved / had been saving money up to the point when he said he couldn't afford to purchase the house.
