"ago" before "since"
A friend of mine told me not to put "ago" before "since," as it's not needed: "it's ten years since he wrote his book" not "ten years ago since."
He didn't give me an explanation for that, though. I would like to why "ten years ago since" isn't correct.

Ago is used to refer to a past time/date. Since is used to refer to the time from a past time/date to this moment. She left me ten years ago.
