This latest tragedy merely confirms my view that the law must be tightened. Could I alter " merely " to " only confirms or " simply confirms" and what would be the nuance ? Or it Would sound unnatural?

Vladv Adjectives Actually, they're adverbs. From weakest to strongest (in my opinion): simply confirms: 'simply' is a very ordinary word. merely confirms: 'merely' is more formal, but otherwise it's the same as 'simply'.
