Mortimer J. Adler never recommended that students stop in 6th grade.
But a sixth grader should be able to read a wide variety of materials on many subjects. The student should be able to understand the ideas in the material, and summarize the text in their own words.

Hi AlpheccaStars, I don't mean say that Adler recommend that students stop in 6th grade, but in the preface of the Adler book I understand that the school engages to develop to reading of students mainly in the elementary school. That I want know is what are the abilities to reading of the a elementary school student ?

So, fluency in reading silently and aloud, you learn it in elementary school. Using written text to build vocabulary you can make it if most reading and mark the unknow words. But don't ever you understand what read. So you use the your knowing that you have for understand new topic. May be Adler mean that the school don't give good tools to study new topic in independent way.

Hi AlpheccaStars, the word list that you linked in a previous post is used don't only for reinforce your vocabolary, but that word list is used also for reinforce your pronunciation, so a boy don't know generally how to pronounce a new word. Is it right?
