A variety of + noun + plural or singular?
My question is:
1. A variety of animals ___kept at the zoo.
2. A variety of sample population ___ selected for this research.
For both questions, should the underlined part be "is" or "are"?
My logic is that this should follow the same rule for "a number of" which means a lot. So the the first one is are. But since "population" in the second sentence is not a countable noun, i would put "is" .
I would like to vet my conclusion. I am preparing for the GMAT exam. Thanks for your help.
