A portion of knowledge IS (is definitely correct...)

But,

A portion of students WERE/IS?

According to the grammar rules you should write

A portion of ... is(not are)
As for the portion of students it sounds odd. I suppose it would be better to write:

A group of students ...
And as for WERE/IS - it is incorrect question as were is Past Tense of to be and it isplural whe
