If someone asks me about the types of sentences in English, what  should I say?Should I say imple, compound, and complexOR statement, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory? I am perplexed indeed.

"types of sentences" is too vague a question to answer. There is more than one way to classify sentences, as you already know.

So you should say,

There are two ways to classify sentences. On the one hand, they can be simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. This classifies them by their structure. On the other hand, they can be declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory. This classifies them by their meaning.
