What is the whole sentence? Normally it is "(a) definition of a new type," but the other can possibly be justified on the model of "a sports car of innovative design."

That is not a sentence, I guess you know. That looks like technical writing. I think that "of new type" is OK there, for the reason I gave, but it is a rare construction rarely justifiable.
