{"id":29708,"date":"2020-02-22T16:00:20","date_gmt":"2020-02-22T16:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=29708"},"modified":"2020-02-22T16:00:20","modified_gmt":"2020-02-22T16:00:20","slug":"tanya-plibersek-warn-invest-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/tanya-plibersek-warn-invest-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Tanya Plibersek warns Australia govt on the need to invest in education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Australian politician and current deputy leader of the Labor party, Tanya Plibersek, has issued a warning to government and internal critics on the need to address the issue of inequality in schools.<\/strong><br \/>\nShe made this call in a speech delivered to the Australian Education Union, were Plibersek warned both institutions that the fight for equal school funding is not over.<br \/>\n<strong>Plibersek, in her speech, further warns both institutions that the visible inequality in the education facilities portrays the opinion that Australians care more about some children than others.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Additionally, she thank the union for the support given to Labor party at the 2019 election, although Labor didn\u2019t get the opportunity to implement any of their policies.<\/strong><br \/>\nPlibersek noted the \u201cshocking\u201d disparity in capital spending between public and private schools, with half of the $22 billion spent on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/australian-managers-highered-crucial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">school capital improvements<\/a> between 2013 and 2017 occurring in just 10 percent of schools.<br \/>\nPlibersek <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tanya_plibersek\/status\/1230659894363054080?s=21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> that inequality was a sign of the nation\u2019s revealed preference. In the same way, a country built \u201cgreat temples and churches\u201d to show it valued God, \u201cwhen a country builds beautiful schools, it\u2019s revealing that it values education.\u201d<br \/>\nShe said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I want Australia to be a nation that prioritises education, not just by paying teachers good salaries, but by building respect into the environment you work in every day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Australia has a skills crisis \u2013 and it\u2019s a crisis of Scott Morrison\u2019s own making.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9RplasrVgE\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/t.co\/9RplasrVgE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tanya Plibersek (@tanya_plibersek) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tanya_plibersek\/status\/1230659894363054080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February 21, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Plibersek\u2019s Labor to prioritize education<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Tanya Pilbersek, in her speech, said that the Labor party would continue to make education funding a crucial point in their mission, and also place emphasis on the disparity between public and private schools\u2019 spending on facilities.<\/strong><br \/>\nShe said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That doesn\u2019t mean our principles have changed, It doesn\u2019t mean our hunger to prosecute them has diminished, we are going to continue our strive for better education.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While at the poll, Labor party had pledged to deliver $14 billion over the ten years to public schools, although internal critics of Labor\u2019s policy agenda argue that big spending promises failed to translate into votes and pushed the opposition towards increasing tax.<\/p>\n<h2>Australian Green to abolish public school fees<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The union\u2019s federal conference also heard from Adam Bandt, Australian Greens leader, who argued that public school fees of up to $5,000 should be abolished because the state system should be free.<\/strong><br \/>\nIn his speech, Bandt explained the Greens\u2019 policy of \u201cgenuinely free education\u201d in public schools and TAFE as part of his proposed \u201cGreen New Deal.\u201d<br \/>\nBandt said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Although public education was free \u201cin a broad sense\u201d, over decades there had been \u201ccreeping cost-shift from the state, pushing [the cost] back onto parents.
