{"id":28378,"date":"2020-01-04T19:00:57","date_gmt":"2020-01-04T19:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=28378"},"modified":"2020-01-04T19:00:57","modified_gmt":"2020-01-04T19:00:57","slug":"proposed-regulatory-rollback-epa-ignore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/proposed-regulatory-rollback-epa-ignore\/","title":{"rendered":"4 proposed regulatory rollbacks by EPA being scrutinized by special board"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An advisory panel consisting of current EPA members found major setbacks on proposed regulatory rollbacks during Trump&#8217;s administration.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The administration keeps a keen eye on proposed regulatory rollbacks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/news-opinion\/epa-science-board-criticizes-proposed-regulatory-rollbacks-66907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now undergoing scrutiny by a special board<\/a> over several proposed regulatory rollbacks that have been ignored and disregarded. <\/strong><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The agency in charge of the investigation is the Science Advisory Board (SAB), where some of its members are current EPA members handpicked by the administration.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>The SAB exists primarily to provide counsel to EPA over scientific studies and technical issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The proposed regulatory rollbacks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Clean Water Act<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The board is looking into the Waters of the US (WOTUS) rule. The ruling limits selected wetlands and waterways from being part of the Clean Water Act.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Based on the boards finding:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The proposal for WOTUS does not fully coincide with existing EPA practices. It may not fully fulfill the objective of the Clean Water Act.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The Clean Water Act aims to restore and maintain biological, chemicals, and physical balance of US water supplies.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Trump administration&#8217;s defense over the WOTUS rule is their preference to follow legal and policy decisions rather than scientific studies.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Scientific Studies<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The board analyzed the draft on Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science rule and found another set of irregularities in it.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The analysis came out with several key points that SAB sees as a problem, like<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Raw data is defined in multiple definitions that left the real purpose unclear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Issues over the privacy law &#8211; &#8220;confidentiality.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Data sets are not replicable<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Huge costs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rollback on clean cars<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThe clean car rollback is a joint agreement between the EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.<br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The primary component of this program is the Clean Air Act. In this ruling, the existing waiver imposed in California will be revoked. <\/span><br \/>\n<strong>The revocation will set higher standards in vehicle emission tests, and the practice of zero-emission vehicles across states will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/air-pollution-workshops-in-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minimize smog and air pollution around the country<\/a>.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Power plant regulations<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nThe proposed regulatory rollback mentioned EPA scraping the determining factor of what is &#8220;appropriate and sufficient amount of released mercury and other pollutants from coal and oil-fired power plants.<br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The SAB pointed out that EPA didn&#8217;t follow the inclusions from the Clean Air Act that an updated review should be conducted to assess if there should be any changes in the allowed residual risk.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">EPA currently imposes a limit that has not been changed and examined since 2012.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the board:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For future mercury regulation, EPA should conduct a new risk assessment test.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An advisory panel consisting of current EPA members found major setbacks on proposed regulatory rollbacks during Trump&#8217;s administration.
