{"id":27884,"date":"2019-12-24T02:00:20","date_gmt":"2019-12-24T02:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=27884"},"modified":"2019-12-24T02:00:20","modified_gmt":"2019-12-24T02:00:20","slug":"police-hong-kong-protesters-cockroaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/police-hong-kong-protesters-cockroaches\/","title":{"rendered":"Police calls Hong Kong protesters &quot;cockroaches&quot;, a compliment not an insult"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Police compliment Hong Kong protesters by calling them cockroaches.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hong Kong protesters triggered<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hong Kong protesters were triggered by a statement coming from the Hong Kong police, calling them &#8220;<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">cockroaches.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A member of the Hong Kong police public relations office has confirmed that several police officers called out Hong Kong protesters during a rally as\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;cockroaches.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But, the officer was quick to defend the statement by saying,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The police meant it is a compliment rather than an insult<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The term\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">cockroach<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was used to refer to protesters&#8217; resiliency and vitality despite times of difficulties.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MONDAY &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Appearing in the &#8220;Hong Kong Connection&#8221; segment of an RTHK news programme was Chief Inspector Tam Yu-hei. In his interview, Tam mentioned that everything was part of the trading of insults between police and protesters during rallies. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/polyu-demands-end-to-campus-siege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The several months-long demonstrations in Hong Kong has caused physical and mental stress<\/a> to both the police and demonstrators.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Verbal confrontation from both sides<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tam argued that protesters should take verbal confrontations lightly.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We refer to them as cockroaches since they are full of vitality and pesky survivors, even in different situations. They used to call us dogs, but we don&#8217;t take offence to that.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The officer pointed out that even protesters throw verbal insults against them, but, they take it lightly and look at it on a positive point of view.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When they call us dogs, we imagine ourselves as being loyal and obedient.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dogs-vs-cockroaches-on-hong-kong-streets-language-of-genocide-rears-its-head\/2019\/11\/04\/32498608-fea7-11e9-8341-cc3dce52e7de_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">When they throw insults against us, we still maintain professionalism<\/a> and do not offer hostile actions against them. How come when they get their fair share of verbal insults, they go to social media to gain sympathy?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Senior Officer apologizes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the same day, Superintendent Kwok Ka-chuen of the Police Public Relations office apologizes during an abrupt press briefing.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his statement,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It is not ideal for labelling a group of people like cockroaches. The extended demonstrations are causing tension between police and Hong Kong protesters.
