{"id":27096,"date":"2019-12-05T04:22:57","date_gmt":"2019-12-05T04:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=27096"},"modified":"2019-12-05T04:22:57","modified_gmt":"2019-12-05T04:22:57","slug":"maxim-chairman-slams-ed-sector-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/maxim-chairman-slams-ed-sector-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Maxim chairman slams education sector for violent H\u2019Kong protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The 71-year-old daughter of the founder of restaurant chain Maxim\u2019s has blasted Hong Kong&#8217;s Education Sector, for failing to instill national pride and true identities in its young folks.<\/strong><br \/>\nAnnie Wu Suk-ching, a renowned Pro-Beijing businesswoman blamed the city\u2019s education system for its failure to encourage a proper sense of national identity in local youths.<br \/>\nShe also slammed parents of young children who refused to instill patriotism in their offsprings and did not bring them up properly.<br \/>\nWu made this statement after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maximrestaurants.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maxim restaurants<\/a> were repeatedly vandalized during the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/polyu-demands-end-to-campus-siege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unrest<\/a> in the city which was triggered by the now-withdrawn extradition bill.<br \/>\nWu condemned the action of the Hong Kong\u2019s protesters explaining she has lost hope in the city\u2019s next two generations, and that the young people have no idea of what they are doing.<br \/>\nThe Pro-Beijing businesswoman had earlier denounced the movement of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, saying;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the views of the protesters represent that of a small group of radicals and not the views of all 7.5 million Hongkongers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her comments infuriated protesters, increasing the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/liamstone_19\/status\/1199369663966109696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">level <\/a>of vandalism against Maxim\u2019s outlets around Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">HongKong protesters set fire to a Maxim&#39;s Caterers restaurant inside a shopping mall. They will not stop violence and vandalism after winning District Council election, they will just legalize the violence and vandalism by protesters. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TH2f93tXCq\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/TH2f93tXCq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Liam Stone\u77f3\u7acb\u5b89 (@liamstone_19) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/liamstone_19\/status\/1199369663966109696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">November 26, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nThe Maxim boss is the founder and serving member of the management committee of the Chinese Foundation Secondary School in Siu Sai Wan and a former member of the Chinese People&#8217;s Political Consultative Conference Standing Committee, the country\u2019s top political advisory body.<br \/>\nWu has openly been criticizing the protesters\u2019 siege of the airport, railway, and damage to educational facilities, stating the move&#8217;s damage to how the world views Hong Kong.<br \/>\nMany disapprove of the destruction on Maxim\u2019s outlets by protesters but added that <strong>Wu has not done much for youngsters, making her ineligible to say she has given up on the present generation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Maxim Group distanced itself from Wu\u2019s comments<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Maxim\u2019s Group has issued a directive to staff to apologize to customers after the restaurants were targeted by anti-government protesters in Sha Tin\u2019s New Town Plaza during a rally on Sunday.<br \/>\nThe firm owns and operates several well-known chains, including the Hong Kong operations for Starbucks, upmarket bakery and cafe Cova, and Chinese restaurants including Jade Garden and Peking Garden.<br \/>\nThe group issued its statement, thanking its frontline staff. And added it has issued emergency guidelines and assistance to affected employees, although it didn\u2019t elaborate on what the guidelines included.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Education sector reaction<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Education Department has said in a reply to Wu\u2019s comment that although it shares responsibility for fostering students\u2019 values, but in this case, the causes of young people taking part in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/student-mourns-chaos-in-hong-kong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal<\/a> activities were complex and involved more than the education system.<\/strong><br \/>\nIp Kin-yuen, education sector lawmaker said Wu misunderstood the city\u2019s education system, arguing that many schools in the region do their best to instill patriotism in the young ones.<br \/>\nAccording to Ip, all secondary schools have Chinese history in their curriculum, while kindergarten and primary school pupils could learn about Chinese culture and history in other subjects.<br \/>\nAdding that it will be unfair to blame the educational sector, stating that the social movement is not driven by the education system, but the administrative problems of the government.<\/p>\n<h2>Wu is not involved in any managerial decision<\/h2>\n<p>Maxim&#8217;s Caterers Limited is a Hong Kong-based food, beverage and restaurant chain 50% owned by Dairy Farm International Holdings Limited. Founded in 1956, the company operates over 1,000 outlets in Hong Kong, China, Cambodia, and Vietnam.<br \/>\nThis is not the first time that Wu had issued a statement against the students or their protest actions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On September 11, Annie Wu appeared at the United Nations Human Rights Council representing the Hong Kong Federation of Women, alongside billionaire businesswoman Pansy Ho. The pair said in a statement that the \u201csmall group of radical protesters,\u201d which used \u201csystematic and calculated violent acts,\u201d did not represent all Hongkongers.<br \/>\nThe duo also defended the use of tear gas and rubber bullets by Hong Kong police, saying that the crowd control tactics were also adopted elsewhere in the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Students at two Hong Kong universities have held protests targeting caterer Maxim\u2019s Group after Annie Wu \u2013 the daughter of the firm\u2019s founder \u2013 denounced the pro-democracy movement during an appearance at the United Nations.<br \/>\nMaxim\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkongfp.com\/2019\/09\/25\/hong-kong-uni-students-boycott-maxims-caterer-founders-daughter-blasts-pro-democracy-protesters-un\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has issued a statement saying that Wu \u201cdoes not hold any position at the company\u201d<\/a> and is not involved in managerial decisions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 71-year-old daughter of the founder of restaurant chain Maxim\u2019s has blasted Hong Kong&#8217;s Education Sector, for failing to instill national pride and true identities in its young folks.
