{"id":26772,"date":"2019-11-26T20:00:05","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T20:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/?p=26772"},"modified":"2019-11-26T20:00:05","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T20:00:05","slug":"biological-enzymes-make-hydrogen-gas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.englishforward.com\/news\/biological-enzymes-make-hydrogen-gas\/","title":{"rendered":"Ingenious way to generate Hydrogen Gas: A study on biological enzymes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A collaboration from the University of Illinois and the University of California is peeking into ways to use biological enzymes to generate Hydrogen gas.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hydrogen Gas, an eco-friendly energy source<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hydrogen gas is a<\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>n essential source of energy and a potential alternative to clean energy fuel.<\/strong> It has a high energy density and minimal greenhouse emission after combustion.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A recent study from a research collaboration between the University of Illinois and the University of California focuses on generating renewable hydrogen through biological sources. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/11\/191125120936.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The process is called biohydrogen<\/a>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The discovery leans toward a hydrogen fuel industry at a global scale which is sustainable and at the same time environmentally friendly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>As of today, hydrogen fuel comes from fossil fuels through a procedure called the thermochemical process.<\/strong> And we all know that anything related to fossil fuels is a threat to the environment. Researchers are doing their best to come up with a product which is enticing to the green fuel market.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>As a response to the call\u00a0for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/news\/climate-change-affecting-aquatic-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eco-friendly renewable energy sources<\/a>, scientists started to look into biologically synthesized hydrogen as an option.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Biological enzymes can be more efficient compared to other man-made processes.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The use of biological enzymes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chemists labeled the biological enzymes responsible for making and burning hydrogen gas as hydrogenases. Currently, there are two varieties, namely iron-nickel and iron-iron, named after the active elements instigating the chemical reactions.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Researchers are emphasizing the iron-iron variety due to its faster reaction time, making the study more efficient.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Here are some general information generalized from tinkering with several enzymes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Enzyme sites are assembled using ten parts<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Four Carbon Monoxide molecules<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two Cyanide ions<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two Iron ions<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two groups of Cysteine, a Sulfur-containing Amino acid<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The enzymes engine consists of two identical chambers having five chemicals each<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two Carbon Monoxide molecules<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One Cyanide ion<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One Iron ion<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and one Cysteine group<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Previous research suggests that an active site engine consists of 11 elements<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ql-indent-1\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Researchers are still finding that one final element to fit in with the other enzymes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chemist professor and co-author, Thomas Rauchfuss stated:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>The primary purpose of this study is to envision real enzymes producing hydrogen gas, but it still way beyond our knowledge on how to reproduce the results and test inside the laboratory.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Industrial uses of hydrogen<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hydrogen is used in the manufacture of two of the most important chemical compounds made industrially,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.essentialchemicalindustry.org\/chemicals\/ammonia.html#ammonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ammonia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.essentialchemicalindustry.org\/chemicals\/methanol.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">methanol<\/a>.<\/strong> It is also used in the refining of oil, for example in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.essentialchemicalindustry.org\/processes\/cracking-isomerisation-and-reforming.html#reforming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reforming<\/a>, one of the processes for obtaining high-grade petrol and in removing sulfur compounds from petroleum which would otherwise\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.essentialchemicalindustry.org\/processes\/catalysis-in-industry.html#poison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poison<\/a>\u00a0the catalytic converters fitted to cars.<br \/>\nIn years to come, hydrogen itself may become one of the most important fuels for cars as on burning it does not produce carbon dioxide, but there are major problems to be overcome before it can be used in this way. \u00a0These include its manufacture, storage, distribution and how it can be used efficiently in cars.
